What are the Symptoms of Herpes Zoster?

Herpes Zoster is the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus
which during the primary infection stage causes chicken pox.
Once the initial illness resolves, the virus remains dormant
(latent) in the dorsal root ganglia. Varicella zoster virus can then
reactivate later in a person’s life and cause a painful rash known as the herpes zoster. The rash most commonly appears on the face or the trunk but can also appear throughout the body. This rash can be painful, itchy, tingly and typically appears as clusters of clear vesicles. Postherpetic neuralgia is the most common
complication of herpes zoster, causing burning pain that lasts long
after the rash has been resolved. While not everyone who has
had chickenpox will experience symptoms of herpes zoster, those
with compromised immune systems or under extreme stress are at an increased risk.
